That Great Victory

October 29, 2021

Dear Crossroads Family & Friends,

The cheer erupted from within me and filled our living room with a combination of elation and disbelief!  Laura (well past her bedtime) and I stared at each other open-mouthed.  Had we really just seen what we saw?

Our favorite football team had been under-resourced this week due to key people being out from injuries and Covid.  They had played admirably the whole game, but now looked certain to lose after failing to score from 1 yard out and allowing the opponent to march 94 yards and be 5 yards from scoring their own game winner with only 15 seconds left.  Defeat seemed inevitable

But that’s when they, quite literally, “snatched victory” from the jaws of defeat with an improbable interception in the end zone-ensuring victory and igniting celebration in much of Wisconsin!

Years ago, there was an under-resourced group who began following a man who was unimpressive to look at and lacked official credentials. His words and deeds, however, were gracious and truthful in such a way that they both humbled and inspired listeners to believe and love God with all of themselves and love people as themselves!

He changed lives admirably, but appeared destined for defeat once his claims of divinity mobilized heavily resourced opponents against him.  They marched him to the place of “The Skull” and crucified him there.  Hanging dead on that cross, death looked undefeatable

But on death’s third day, quite literally, God’s Spirit “snatched victory” from crucified defeat with an impossible resurrection from the dead zone-sharing Jesus’ victory and igniting new life the world over!  New life filled with and powered by irrepressible joy and gratitude for God’s grace!

That great victory still stands.  Let’s live in and share it!

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinnersChrist died for us.
Romans 5:8
Christ suffered and died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but died for sinners to bring you to GodHe suffered death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.
1 Peter 3:18
I have been crucified with Christ and no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20
