What Are You Drinking?

Sitting down for lunch with some friends, I noticed they’d gotten beverages already.  As my rear end hit the chair, an unseen voice startled me with, “What are you drinking?”

Not familiar with my options, I surveyed the table and told the suddenly present waitress, “I’ll have what they’re having,” pointing to a shared corner.  Now in some situations, that’d be risky business.  But I figured I was pretty safe with this lot.  Oh, how wrong I was…

“So, what am I having?” I asked.  I don’t recall the name, but it’s best described as strong tea with honey and steamed oat juice (I mean milk).  No, I don’t!  Milk comes from cows, goats, squirrels, and such.  In no way plants or trees!  Btw, what do you call milk from squirrels?  Squilk, of course!  That’s for you Em & Josh!

“Kind of an oxymoron?” I joked.  Glaring right at me, the waitress said, “Yes, most definitely.”  I had it coming!  And it was very good!

But enough about milk marketing conspiracies!  Years ago, when God began to lead his people out of oppressive slavery in Egypt and into a flourishing love relationship with him, he described the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual reality with him ahead as, “a land flowing with milk and honey!”  Powerful images of health, sustenance, and sweetness they had never known! These helped empower the people to follow God in faith, even with plenty of missteps, in the all-important journey from the slaver’s punishing whip to God’s loving embrace!
Today, God continues to draw and lead people into a love relationship with himself through Jesus Christ.  Wherever your “milk” comes from, let’s look to and follow Jesus in faith out of our slaveries to pride, fear, and other bondages into his loving reality living within and reaching through us!

“I, the Lord, God have come down to rescue them
from the hand of the Egyptians
and to bring them up out of that land
into a good and spacious land,
a land flowing with milk and honey.”         -Exodus 3:8

But Moses said to God, “Who am I,
that I should go to Pharaoh
and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
And God said, “I will be with you…”          -Exodus 3:11-12
