Eclipse

Here comes the solar eclipse and interest in this event varies widely… I’m in the excited camp, fascinated by the solar system since I was a kid when NASA was first sending astronauts to the moon. I even used to draw pictures of the sun and planets when bored in school. A bit weird, I know. Just don’t tell Mrs. Leaf, my grade 2 teacher!

Anyway, have you wondered how the moon, which is quite small, is able to block out the sun, which is so much larger? Simply put, though the sun is ~400 times larger, when the moon gets in between the sun and earth, it can block the sun (partially or fully) because it is ~400 times closer to earth than the sun is. It’s all about the smaller moon aligning in between and quite a bit closer, like it will be on April 8th!

Similarly, have you wondered how God, who is quite big as Creator and Sustainer of the universe, can get blocked from our awareness, during busy, difficult, fearful, challenging, or frustrating times in life? You know,when life feels overwhelming and God seems distant or non-existent?

Simply put, though such times are small compared to God, when we let them get positioned between us and God, their intensity can truly block out our experience of God’s love, closeness, and power like a dark shadow. During such times, centering on God in a faith-following relationship with Jesus Christ can make all the difference!
