Rough Seas
This week I got thinking about a folk-rock song from the 70’s that riveted me long before I made Wisconsin home and became more familiar with the greatness of the Great Lakes…
The song tells of a tragic shipwreck during a violent storm on Lake Superior. Gordon Lightfoot’s “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” honors the history and power of such storms and the courage of the 29 seamen who lost their lives facing the long odds of their storm. It transports listeners onto the ship alongside the crew and draws them into the struggle!
Many years before, on another continent, on a smaller storm-prone sea, in a much smaller boat, a group of 13 faced a violent, fear-inducing storm. Though 30-35% were familiar with and made their livelihood on the lake, they were terrified and certain they were going to drown!
They’d forgotten it was their leader who had led them into the boat out on the deep waters and who was still with them. When Jesus got up, he reminded them He Is Greater than any great lake, threat, or violent storm and can be trusted and followed for life and in all of life! – Matthew 8:23-27
Let’s follow Jesus forward, loving the people & tasks entrusted to us!
