Rough Waters
I saw the pier from the parking lot as I left the restaurant. It kind of called me without speaking. Though my legs were wobbly from the bike ride and stiff from sitting, I was amped from the coffee and made my way to it. Stepping on, I realized it was longer, narrower, and more worn than I’d thought. Out in the open, a strong wind hit me from the left and I could feel the choppy water move the pier under my feet.
My brain said, “Not sure this a good idea!” But I kept going. At the end of the pier, I raised my arms, closed my eyes, and just listened to the wind and waves which brought to mind Jesus and Simon Peter years ago…
After Jesus had done the impossible and multiplied the very limited resources of the his disciples (5 loaves & 2 fish) to meet the needs of thousands, he sent the twelve in a boat to the Sea of Galilee’s other side while he stayed. Later, he walked out to and terrified them as they struggled in the boat against strong wind and waves.
At Peter’s request, Jesus called Peter to water-walk to him, making it possible before Peter lost his focus and began to sink. Jesus saved Peter from drowning and used the experience as a teaching point for all twelve disciples and also for us today…
- Jesus will lead us into challenging situations to grow us!
- Jesus will show up to help us, but it may initially unnerve us!
- Jesus will help us ascend and recover & learn from our descents!
Let’s keep our focus on Jesus & his love for us when we are in over our heads!
