Lights and Ladders
Tis the season of ladder-climbing in our neighborhood! Big Blue (24ft extension) and Old Orange & Yellow (10ft & 8ft A-frames) get passed around for outdoor, high altitude hanging of Christmas lights & wreaths! It’s a great way to resist the cold and darkness that take hold the next two months!
I also enjoy hanging lights (even when my hands & cheeks get numb) because it reminds me of Jesus Christ coming into the world as God’s light and love in order to help us human beings overcome darkness and selfishness within ourselves and in the world around us!
Jesus did so not by ladder-climbing, but by ladder-descending! He allowed himself to be born vulnerably in a common stable to parents (mother/stepfather) forced to migrate far from home and family. By age two, they all had to flee as refugees to another county from a king who sought to murder him. When that king died, they returned to his parents’ home village, where Jesus grew up in obscurity, until he began his public ministry as an adult who sacrificially served God and the people around him.
The light and love Jesus shared is as strong as ever and still being passed person to person to dispel darkness today! Jesus is God with Us, One of Us, and the One Who Truly Gets Us! Let’s get off our ladders and humbly receive and share his light and love with others.
