Physician
Hearing my friend’s voice and catching up together was joyful and fun. Much better than our text exchanges over the years! Suddenly the tone changed, “My doctor wants me to get a colonoscopy.” Pause. “They scare me, I’m not going to do it! I’d rather not know.” I felt the dread and understood…
I told my friend I had felt similarly until God used one 5 years ago to save my life. My routine colonoscopy, without warning signs, caught an aggressive cancer before it got into my abdomen and became a major problem. I’m very thankful for the care and diagnostics of medical professionals, that God works thru, to help people like me!
As our conversation continued, I listened and learned my friend had real concerns based in experiences I wasn’t aware of. I encouraged my friend to talk openly with the doctor and to listen as well. I hope that happens and they make away forward together!
I think the toughest things about consenting to treatment or altering behavior based on diagnostic tests or input from outside yourself is it requires both humility and faith. Humility, to admit there are others with data, insight, or experience that you don’t have, but need. Faith, to trust in the benefit of what you don’t readily see or fully understand.
Similar to my initial reaction to cancer, I remember being less than thrilled upon learning Jesus thought I could use some of his unique help with my “I problem” many years ago. I did eventually come around after looking closer at his credentials, and am glad I did! Let’s lean into our medical professionals and Jesus, the Great Physician!
